A compound called β-hydroxybutyrate, or BHB, helps to inhibit a gene called NLRP3, which codes for proteins that may increase inflammation. These proteins are referred to as the inflammasome.
Linked to common autoimmune conditions like diabetes, NLRP3 genes may provide more clues about the management and prevention of such diseases.
Low-carb diet, fasting, and high-intensity exercise can help
After introducing BHB to animal and human cells that were diseased by NLRP3, researchers found that inflammation was reduced.
A ketogentic diet, one that is very low in carbohydrates, was also linked to elevated blood levels of BHB in mice.
"Our results suggest that the endogenous metabolites like BHB that are produced during low-carb dieting, fasting, or high-intensity exercise can lower the NLRP3 inflammasome," said Vishwa Deep Dixit, professor in the Section of Comparative Medicine at Yale School of Medicine.
The study is published in the journal Nature Medicine.
