"We found that this modest addition to breakfast improved working memory over six hours in older people with pre-diabetes," said Professor Mark Wahlqvist.
Helpful for dementia
Turmeric is a spice that is used widely in Asian dishes. The compound of curcumin, which makes turmeric yellow, has been linked to reduced dementia risk.
"Our findings with turmeric are consistent with these observations, insofar as they appear to influence cognitive function where there is disordered energy metabolism and insulin resistance," Wahlqvist said.
Working memory is one of the most important mental faculties, he said, and it can be used to predict future impairments or problems that sometimes occur in diabetic patients.
