Power 20, a smartphone and tablet app, guides users through short exercise programs designed to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics.
Doctors tend to tell patients that they need to eat right and exercise, Dr. Michael Redlener, Director of Prehospital Care at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, said in a press release. But clear-cut strategies can be more useful than general guidance.
"The more specific physicians can be with their patients about how to achieve cardiovascular health, the more likely patients with diabetes and risk of heart disease will be able to reach these goals," Dr. Redlener said.
Power 20 app includes how-to instructions and timer
Arshad Chowdhury, creator of Power 20, designed the app to help diabetics learn simple exercises that will help lower blood sugar levels. The app features visual timers, so users know how much time remains for a current exercise, and instructions on how to use a chair, ball, wall or other household equipment to complete the moves. The exercises are based on high-intensity interval training (HIT), which has been shown in some studies to help lower blood sugar levels and prevent spikes after meals in people with type 2 diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics get about 20 minutes of exercise per day.
Other smartphone apps for diabetics are available, like AdhereTech, which allows users to count pills and receive text message reminders about taking medication, or Track 3, which helps diabetics track their sugar consumption.
