College Life of a Diabetic

Tyler Stevenson shares his story of college life as a diabetic. Of course, thousands of young adults with diabetes attend college and Tyler really is not that different from any other diabetic. However, in sharing his story we hope it will put more parents’ minds at ease when their child goes off to college.

His Parents Reaction to his College Life

Like most parents his parents are no different they were very worried and concerned. Tyler had always had them to remind him to take his insulin, monitor his food and be there in case of an emergency. Tyler’s first step in easing his parent’s worries was “to prove to them that you're taking care of yourself and doing a good job, and then they'll stop worrying.” They may still worry a little but as time passes, they will relax some and it gets easier for them.

Tyler had it Tough at First

Tyler states College, as anybody knows, is pretty random. There is no schedule. You have your classes, and other than that, you're doing different things all the time. So initially, when I was a freshman living in a dorm, my challenge was finding the time to stop for a moment, sit down and write everything out, calculate it, and then give myself the bolus before I ate. Sometimes I was like "Oh my god, I've got to eat in two seconds, I'm late for class...I've just got to check my blood, estimate, give myself the insulin, and go." That method didn’t work so well so, he had to make the time to take care of himself and ultimately that is what it is all about a college students diabetes has to come first!

How he Made it Work

With the help of his parents, he started labeling the carbs on his foods, and then he would write the amount of insulin need as well on the label. An example he used was a bag of chips is 18 carbs that is 1.8 of insulin. He did this for all his foods and said from then on everything fell into place and he had his college life with diabetes under control.
